Cafe Reopens on Saturday May 30, 2020
with Outdoor Seating & Safety as a Priority
Local coffee shop staple, One World Roasters, is set to open its doors to the public once again on Saturday, May 30th. The cafe and roastery located at 967 North High Street in East Haven will be hosting a grand re-opening day that includes cold brew coffee and some new treats for customers.
The shop specializes in roasting and serving its own organic and fair trade coffees. While the cafe has become a destination for many locals, during the shutdown the coffee roastery has been very busy taking a heavy volume of online orders. While their customers may have not be able to venture out to the cafe, the demand for the roastery’s coffee at home has held steady.
Customers may, however, notice some changes when they visit the reopened shop on May 30th — biodegradable straws, upcycled crafts, and free coffee grounds for composting — all parts of One World Roasters 2020 green initiative. Shop owners Eric Ciolino and Christine Ucich have committed to a mission of being a sustainable business and ask customers to help them in this goal. They advise picking up reusable and refillable coffee canisters as a good place to start.
One World plans to reopen with new social distancing rules and outdoor seating only for the safety of its customers and staff. The reopening day comes right in time for the warmer spring season with darkly-roasted cold brew made from One World’s Colombian El Toro coffee, which customers may enjoy while sitting outside on the garden patio.
The cafe is also teasing the introduction of some new latte offerings to their ever-changing menu and will have further details on them as the reopening approaches.
One World Roasters will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 30th. For more information on the shop and their reopening visit their website at www.oneworldroasters.com.
Local Coffee Roaster Opens Specialty Coffee Shop
in a Historic East Haven Property
Serving up velvety shots of organic espresso, a wide assortment of single origin coffees from across the globe, macchiatos, americanos, and fresh pastries, One World Roasters looks to satisfy the need for a cozy coffee shop locals can call their own when it opens the doors of its café to the public in January.
“When people walk in, right away they’ll see the big eco-friendly coffee roaster I use every day and smell the incredible aroma of its freshly roasted coffees brewing in the café,”says owner Eric Ciolino. There’s nothing quite like that in the area, and this kind of direct connection to the customer is a tribute to the building’s history,” he adds.
Ciolino is keenly aware of the property’s unique background in serving not only the community of East Haven, but many parts of Connecticut in the earliest days of the country’s history. Known until recently as the Holt House, built in 1775 by Daniel Holt, a farmer and lieutenant for a militia in the American Revolution, the space has captured local interest as a memento of a past era.
After several generations of ownership by the Holt family, the property was sold to Mrs. Louis Kempter in the early 1900’s who converted the property into a modern dairy farm that produced and distributed 300 quarts of milk each day to residents throughout the town and well beyond.
With the opening of One World Roasters’ coffee shop the building returns to its roots of serving the community and looks to honor those who serve the public everyday. “For the month of January we’re offering first responders — police, fire fighters, EMTs, ambulance personnel, and others, coupons for a free 12 ounce coffee,” says Ciolino. “It’s our way of saying hello, and expressing our desire to be a part of something much greater than ourselves,” he adds.
The organic roastery, which has gradually built a dedicated following since its inception in 2014, also looks to fill a void many organic food and beverage fans in the East Haven area are well aware of. As consumers have become more health-conscious and concerned with sustainability, demand for organic products has exploded internationally and grown at a faster rate than many suppliers can keep up with.
Farm Journal notes that sales of organic products rose 11% over the last year alone, while analysts predict the organic food and beverage market will expand at a compound annual growth rate of 14.8% between 2018 and 2022. The picture this paints is one where customers are not able to get organic goods quickly and sustainably enough, especially in small towns.
Ciolino believes One World Roasters can help meet this need in the local area, while being mindful of their impact globally. “Our customers are very passionate people — they care about the details — how their coffee is grown, how it was sourced, how the people growing it were treated,” he says. All of OWR’s coffees are sourced from small organic farms and certified fair trade.
“I think we bring something special to the table and I cannot wait to share it with the East Haven community,” says Ciolino.
