GAIN COMPREHENSIVE ROASTING KNOWLEDGE

​Becoming a professional coffee roaster who produces coffees that are sold to the public, carries responsibilities that roasting for a hobby or personal use does not. We designed this program for coffee professionals who are new to roasting or who are self-taught but want to follow a formal curriculum to fast-track learning or fill knowledge gaps. It is particularly designed for those who run small operations and want to roast on gas-fired drum roasters, but much of it can be applied to roasting for bigger companies, too. You will be able to apply concepts at work immediately, which will be incredibly valuable to your business. 

The training program includes a 3 month post-training support period. You can email us as many questions as you'd like and participate in two free phone calls during this timeframe.

If you have any questions, please contact us. Our online course includes in-person instruction and workbook readings & activities that go in-depth on each of the roasting concepts. The main units are:

ROASTER OPERATION, SAFETY & GMPs

In this unit you will learn:
- Terminology to describe coffee drum roaster
- Manufacturer guidelines & best practices for cleaning/maintenance schedules
- Fire safety protocols
- How to follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and product safety practices

MECHANICS OF ROASTING

In this unit you will learn:
- How to operate a basic drum roaster safely
- General knowledge of coffee, heat, and chemistry to make decisions on roasting coffees to bring out desired sensory characteristics
- Basic practices of roasting coffee
- How to identify common roasting defects during roasting & cupping processes
​- How to create a roast profile

ROAST EVALUATION & QUALITY CONTROL

In this unit you will learn:
- Quality control activity & record management
- Essentials & common terms of cupping
- How to compare roast profiles and determine differences between coffees

Accomodations & schedule

For accommodations, our roastery is less than ten minutes from the Home2 Suites by Hilton in East Haven, Connecticut. There are also a number of Airbnbs within a short distance of the shop.

The program runs 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 26 and 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Sunday, April 27. Catered luncheon included and provided on site both Saturday and Sunday. Continental breakfast provided on Sunday.
