Farm: Kalinzi Village
Kalinzi Village, tucked away in the tropical Kigoma region of northwestern Tanzania, is home to a vibrant network of independent small farmholders that we’re very proud to be working with. As an institution, Kalinzi Village embodies the spirit of conservation and ethical treatment we hold all of our coffee suppliers to.
Using shade-grown practices, Kalinzi farmers are so careful and conservationally-minded that they are able to maintain a friendly coexistence with the local chimpanzee population that flourishes in the forests they grow their very special coffee cherries in. Purchases of their famed “Peaberry coffee” not only allow thousands of families to earn liveable wages, but also contribute directly to conservation of the Gombe chimps in the region.
Furthermore, Tanzania’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF), promotes the well being of families in agricultural industries through social programs that allow for low interest farming loans and affordable medical insurance.
Our Coffee: New Shades of Flavor
It feels good to keep things sustainable—but with shade grown coffees, farmers aren’t just doing good, they’re shipping us coffee beans with extraordinary flavor profiles that simply aren’t possible in other commercial practices! Our Kalinzi Tropics Special Reserve is a perfect example—the slow and steady ripening process that takes place under the natural Kigoma forest canopy, produces a complex and deeply flavorful coffee cherry with sweet plum and melon notes balanced with just the right tang and a heavenly lemon zest aroma!
What’s a “Peaberry” Anyway??
Normally coffee cherries create two nearly identical beans, each with a flattened edge— “Peaberry” refers to a rare genetic variation that produces a coffee cherry with only a single bean during growth. Peaberry beans, which are present in only about 5% of coffee yields, are generally sought after for their brighter cup profiles and unique roast profiles that result from their rounded or oval shape.
“Roasting the Peaberry beans was a wonderful challenge,” says Roast Master Eric Ciolino. “Because of their unique shape and smaller size, the beans require extra attention and a more delicate roast, but the result is well worth it! This coffee showcase’s the beans’ famed fruit and spice notes while enhancing them with roasty cocoa and walnut flavors that deepen as the coffee settles in the cup. It’s a dynamic sipping experience that evolves deliciously from moment to moment!”
