COMMUNITY BLENDS: COFFEE FOR A CAUSE

It's no secret; we love coffee. We care very deeply about it – finding it, roasting it, blending it, and certainly serving it fresh to our amazing customers (at our coffeehouse). 

 ... But that isn't all we're about ... far from it! Beyond our love for the craft, there's another reason we started doing this all: we noticed that fair trade and organic coffee wasn't readily available in our area and we wanted to change that and make it affordable to all who wanted it. As we've said before, coffee is one of the most heavily pesticide treated crops in agriculture, and if people don't have a choice to buy organic coffee, there can be health consequences down the line. And, if we don't consider our impact on both farmers and the environment, as the Fair Trade certification accounts for, we're making coffee an unsustainable privilege rather than a force for good in the world.

We started One World Roasters to make great coffee, but also to make a difference at every level possible, and, now, we're proud to extend that philosophy to our individual coffees. Say hello to our first Community Blend of 2021! Ta-dah! The Wintergreen Blend is here! Evergreen trees are one of the most beautiful parts of our winter landscape in New England and a symbol of the resilience of life — no matter the conditions, the pines stand tall and invite us into the great outdoors, even in the colder months of the year. We let them serve as our inspiration when crafting the Wintergreen Blend.

Winter is an amazing time: the holidays, the scenery, the food — for these reasons and more, we look forward to these chillier months each year. 

But many of us struggle to keep up healthy habits, especially concerning physical activity and exposure to sunlight and fresh air during the winter months. As Connecticut natives, there is no shortage of gorgeous hiking trails, ski areas, and parks around us, and, yet, each year, for one reason or another, we just don't end up spending much time at them — especially at a time of year when we need them most. 

We want to use our Wintergreen Blend as an opportunity to spread awareness to people all across the state to get outside, enjoy the natural wonders around us, play, have fun (respecting social distance), and let the great outdoors be a part of what keeps us collectively well.

To support this initiative we are contributing 20 percent of all sales from the blend to the Shoreline Greenway Trail, a beautiful 25-mile hiking, biking, picnic, and nature-observation trail extending from New Haven all the way to Madison. If you've ever visited it, you know what a special stretch of land this is, and we want to see more of you out there with us enjoying it! We also want to see it kept in the shape it deserves, so Connecticut can enjoy it for decades to come.

“In wintertime, wine and beer lovers often enjoy the heavier flavors and body of a cabernet or a stout; we applied the same idea to our Wintergreen Blend. Beginning with a base of Mendehling Sumatra coffee, we add a specially dark-roasted Costa Rican bean to the mix to give the Wintergreen Blend the comforting full-body and warmth that will stay with you all day on your hike or ski trip.

Sumatra beans have this earthy, spicy, almost subtly piney flavor to them that reminds me of evergreen trees and the winter landscape —roasting them adds a smoky complexity, and the darker Costa Rican beans add these wonderful chocolatey notes. It’s a really neat mix I haven’t tasted before and I think it will give you just what you need to get to the top of the trail or conquer that last run down the mountain!”
