Creating A Unique Coffee Blend
Where there is coffee, there is connection. When meeting up with an old friend, we get coffee. When celebrating over a great meal, we linger with a sweet espresso. Coffee is the vibrant cup of focus and feel-good energy that creates the perfect scene for everything from enlightening conversation, to a relaxed afternoon with friends—or even the business deal of a lifetime. Wherever that heavenly aroma carries, community, creation, and good times are sure to follow.
At One World Coffee Roasters, we take pride in crafting the perfect flavor pairing for each of these moments with our in-house artisanal coffee blends. Every business we work with has their own story of connection—with their clients and across their teams. There is a specific biography, mood, and identity they all want to communicate to the world around them. Our mission is developing one-of-a-kind custom coffee blends that tie in perfectly with the unique stories our wholesale partners bring to us.
Blending a Flavorful Narrative
When we begin the initial drafting stage for our blends, we often think about the tale we want each cup to tell. Our signature coffee, the Worldly Blend, pays tribute to the ideas of cultural exchange and connection by uniting beans from each of the three major coffee producing continents into a flavorful harmony. In one sip, it sums up everything we’re about.
On the other hand, our Black Kat Espresso blend takes its name from one of our resident cats (he’s one smooth Kat at that!). He’s a sweet little creature who brings us joy, and that personality is something we aimed to capture in his namesake espresso. Sharing a story through our blends is something we find fun and creatively engaging. It also brings more to the experience of drinking a coffee, when there is a special history and a personal element alongside the wonderful taste.
As you might have noticed from the two examples above, the “genre of a blend” is also important. Are we crafting a seasonal blend with special spices, an “any time” house blend, an espresso, or maybe something wilder that one of our clients has dreamed up!
The Character of a Blend
With our story and goal in mind, we begin to think about which coffees we want to bring together. The symphony of flavor you experience in a cup of our blended coffee does not happen by mere chance. When it comes down to it, each One World Roasters’ blend is a finely-tuned recipe, in which each ingredient adds the exact quality needed to make a purposefully delightful cup.
We need a keen awareness of the best elements each of our single origin beans bring to the table and understand how they will enhance and complement each other. It isn’t just flavor we pay attention to either—which pairings create the right mouthfeel, the most fragrant aroma, and the right balance of acidity and smoothness?
Roast level plays a key part in the development of each of these qualities. Will each coffee in the blend be roasted to the same level or will they be different? And with these (often individually) roasted coffees, what proportion of each makes it into the blend for the desired effect?
Once we’ve nailed down all of these details, we must ensure that we are able to replicate the blend precisely time and time again, through incredibly, obsessively precise notekeeping (don’t ask us for the secret recipe!).
