A LIGHT ROAST TO LOVE: SUMMER BLONDE ALWAYS SHINES BRIGHTLY AT ONE WORLD

Tangy raspberry and green apple — sweet floral nectar and cacao — it’s One World Roasters’ Summer Blonde: A lively ray of sunshine in your morning mug! 

For the hot summer months, nothing beats a fresh, juicy light roast. … “But light roasts are bland aren’t they?” … Not over here they aren’t!

An excellent light roast is the coffee world equivalent of a piece of fresh fruit picked at peak ripeness—overflowing with flavor, and crisp in its clean consistency. Nothing is a clearer test of a coffee’s freshness and flavor quality than a light roast; there’s no char to hide behind—either the beans cut it, or they don’t. 


The first crack of sunlight awakens the natural world at dawn, just as the “first crack” in the roasting process awakens the exceptionally clean and refreshing flavors of our Summer Blonde. The beans of two of our finest single origin varieties are roasted individually with great care to this critical first benchmark of the roast process. It’s just enough to perfectly caramelize the sugars in the beans and unlock their magical flavor profiles, but no more than necessary, as not to obscure those flavors.

Dominican & Kenyan: A Match
Made in Light-Roasted Heaven!

How did we decide which beans to use for our Summer Blonde? It’s quite simple—a whole lot of experimentation and attention to detail!

Assistant roaster, Pepe Bodnar says, “After many tastings, we came to realize these two coffees make wonderful companions. Both lightly roasted coffees offer something unique. The African embodies tart and tangy notes that compliment the floral notes of the Dominican.”

Let’s take a moment to learn a little more about the Dominican and Kenyan bean varieties we use in the Summer Blonde:


Kenyan Kirimiri — Kirimiri Farmers Cooperative Society

One of the newer additions to our single origin offerings, these tangy, sweet, and delightfully fruit-forward African beans come to us by way of Kirimiri Farmers Cooperative Society in Embu county. The 900-strong co-op located near iconic Mount Kenya cultivates tart-sweet organic coffees of exceptionally high quality thanks in large part to both the skilled practices of their producers as well as the unique blend of volcanic minerals naturally occurring in the soil.

African coffees often have pronounced fruit characteristics thanks to the copious amounts of fruit growing and falling to the ground in the vicinity of coffee plants in farming regions.

Kenyan coffees are a bit unique in this respect—where most African varieties tend to primarily feature citrus notes, Kenyan coffees, like those of Kirimiri Farmers Co-op, feature a complex range of berry and apple notes in addition to a balanced citrus tang.

Dominican Pico Duarte: Spirit Mountain

Spirit Mountain have been our longtime direct trade partners in The Dominican   Republic—working with us for nearly a decade to ensure that we bring you the juiciest, sweetest, and most vibrant Pico Duarte possible. 

Their red honey-process coffee was a game-changer for us. The variety has been one of our most popular single origin offerings with its delightful cherry-berry and chocolate notes nurtured to perfection in their slow “shade grown” / bird-friendly farming process. However, Spirit Mountain’s methods do not only stem from a commitment to excellence—they are also what make them model stewards of the precious Dominican rainforests and the countless birds that call them home. 

Lightly roasting these beans, which we usually sell at a darker roast, reinforces the berry fruitiness of Summer Blonde, while adding depth and sophistication to the blend in its sweet, floral honeysuckle and milk chocolate notes.
